Under certain conditions, infectious diseases maybe caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites which live in and on our bodies. Moreover, some infectious diseases can be transmitted from person to person or by insects or other animals, as well as by consuming contaminated food / water or being exposed to organisms in the environment. The scope of this Special Issue will be the promise and challenge of theory, design, fabrication, manufacturing and applications of edge intelligent sensors and signal processing for sensor data for symptoms analysis, virus tracing, disease risk assessment, disease prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. Fortunately, various multifunctional physical sensors, chemical sensors and biosensors have been designed and fabricated in many fields. Moreover, fog/edge computing and Artificial Intelligence have become a promising paradigm for sensor systems. The basic idea is to leverage a multitude of cooperative fog/edge devices and near-user infrastructures to carry out a substantial amount of intelligent computation, and signal processing for sensor data and communications on applications of Infectious Diseases. Thus, signal processing for sensor data, biomedical signal processing and Edge Intelligence have come together to provide new opportunities for sensing, preventing, treating infectious diseases.
There is considerable promise and challenges in the use of edge intelligent sensors for infectious diseases. Some of these challenges include, (1) how to design and manufacture the fog/edge assisted computational intelligent sensors; (2) how to deploy and charge sensors in or on human body, animals, water and other environment for sensing and detecting bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites with high quality of experience; (3) how to guarantee the quality of joint signal processing of audio, image and video in a variety of applications; (4) how to design and model the risk assessment and disease management framework with the assistance of intelligent fog/edge computing; (5) how to make the virus tracking and tracing more intelligent; (6) how to design the Machine Learning-enabled complex content (text, image, speech, video) analysis methods to support treatment of infectious diseases, etc.
This Special Issue on edge intelligent sensors will be devoted to the technologies of research and development of fog/edge computing and intelligent sensors for infectious diseases. Within this context and as supplemental observations, suggested theory, design, fabrication, manufacturing and applications for edge intelligent sensors and systems would be of great interest.
